As Sripath celebrates 20 years of innovation in asphalt technology, it is also an opportunity to reflect on the products that helped shape the company's journey. Among those innovations, ReLIXER® stands out as a product developed to solve one of the asphalt industry's most important modern challenges: how to successfully increase RAP usage without sacrificing pavement performance.
Over the last 12 years, ReLIXER has evolved from an ambitious research initiative into a globally trusted rejuvenator and recycling agent used worldwide. Today, it continues to help producers unlock the value of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) while supporting more sustainable roadway construction.
The Challenge with RAP
For years, the asphalt industry recognized the enormous value of RAP. Recycled asphalt contains aggregates and aged asphalt binder that can be reused in new pavement mixtures, reducing both costs and environmental impact.
The challenge has always been the aged binder.
While aggregates remain stable over time, asphalt binders undergo oxidation as they age. This aging process changes the binder and makes it stiffer and more brittle. As the percentage of RAP used in new asphalt mixes is increased, the aged binder can negatively affect cracking resistance, durability, and long-term pavement performance.
For decades, many agencies and producers remained cautious about exceeding RAP contents of 20-25% because of these concerns.
The industry did not simply need a softer binder. It needed a true rejuvenator capable of restoring balance to aged asphalt.
Developing a Different Kind of Rejuvenator
In 2011, Sripath began extensive R&D and field evaluation work to develop an asphalt rejuvenator specifically engineered for modern high-RAP asphalt mixtures.
The goal was clear: create a product that could rapidly penetrate aged binder, restore functional balance of properties, improve workability, and promote long-term pavement durability without compromising performance.
The result was ReLIXER.
Unlike traditional softening agents, ReLIXER was designed as an asphalt rejuvenator or recycling agent to rebalance aged asphalt binders and restore aging and performance behavior similar to virgin binder systems. The product reduces viscosity, improves flexibility, and helps restore the performance characteristics needed for durable pavements.
At the same time, sustainability remained a central part of the product's design. ReLIXER is manufactured using a blend of bio-based oils that do not burden food crop sources. The product contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), is non-hazardous to handle, and contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reduced carbon footprint. Its Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) reports a negative Global Warming Potential (GWP), supporting the industry's broader sustainability goals.
Early Adoption and Worldwide Growth
Following successful early trials, ReLIXER quickly gained traction in global markets. North American sales began in 2015, followed by expansion into Asia in 2018, Europe and South America in 2021, and Australia in 2023. Over time, the product has been tested, trusted, and used worldwide in a wide range of asphalt mixtures and climates.
Its success has been driven by a combination of performance, ease of use, and economic value. ReLIXER performs effectively at low dosages, integrates easily into asphalt plant operations, and works with a wide range of binders and RAP materials. More importantly, it has helped producers increase RAP usage while reducing dependence on virgin bitumen and fresh aggregates.
Proven Performance in High-RAP Mixtures
One of the defining aspects of ReLIXER's success story has been its strong field and laboratory performance in high-RAP applications.
In Northern India, roadway paving projects successfully utilized >50% RAP mixtures dosed with ReLIXER for paving base courses. Testing demonstrated strong compactability and improved cracking resistance while maintaining acceptable volumetric properties and performance characteristics.
Additional high-RAP evaluations showed excellent resistance to both rutting and cracking in mixtures containing up to 50% RAP. Hamburg Wheel-Track Testing demonstrated acceptable rut depths, while IDEAL-CT testing showed improved cracking resistance. These results reinforced the product's ability to restore functional balance to aged binders rather than simply soften them.
In the United States, ReLIXER was incorporated into a 40% RAP roadway project in Ashburn, Virginia using PG 64-22 binder. Approximately 2,000 tons of asphalt mixture were produced and paved across five lane-miles. Laboratory analysis showed strong low-temperature cracking resistance and improved binder performance properties, demonstrating the product's ability to support durable, high-RAP surface mixtures.
Another major milestone came through high-RAP trials on the Illinois Tollway. Production mixes containing 40% recycled bitumen content achieved a strong balance of cracking resistance, rutting, and performance while also reducing virgin binder demand. The project highlighted how rejuvenated high-RAP mixtures can successfully meet agency performance requirements on heavily trafficked roads while supporting cost savings and sustainability objectives.
Australia has also emerged as an important market for ReLIXER. In Brisbane roadway trials utilizing air-oxidized binders and high-RAP contents, mixtures dosed with ReLIXER demonstrated significantly improved cracking resistance and restored binder properties. Additional PMB rejuvenation trials in Queensland further demonstrated the product's versatility in complex modified binder systems.
Supporting the Future of Sustainable Asphalt
As the asphalt industry continues pushing toward higher RAP usage, lower emissions, and more circular construction practices, asphalt rejuvenators are becoming increasingly important.
ReLIXER was developed well before high-RAP asphalt became one of the industry's dominant conversations. That early vision positioned Sripath to help contractors, producers, and agencies confidently move beyond traditional RAP limitations while still delivering durable pavement performance.
Today, the product continues to support:
- Higher RAP utilization
- Reduced virgin binder consumption
- Lower material costs
- Improved sustainability metrics
- Enhanced pavement durability
- Reduced environmental impact
