Sripath Technologies President Krishna Srinivasan was privileged to serve as a panelist during a workshop held on February 18 entitled “Recycling Techniques for Construction of Sustainable Pavements. The event, hosted by and held at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, was spearheaded by Dr. Dharamveer Singh of ITT Bombay Department of Civil Engineering and coordinated by Dr. Solomon Debbarma, Assistant Professor, IIT Bombay. The event was also funded by the Institute of Eminence (IoE).
Over 200 attendees experienced a full day of programming including presentations from key industry experts and leaders representing both public and private industry constituents from the bitumen and asphalt industry as well as leading academics from around the world. Workshop topics included full-depth reclamation of roadway surfaces, cold mix and hot mix recycling, recycled concrete aggregates, and the use reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) in paving mixes.
During the panel discussion, Srinivasan spoke on a variety of topics regarding asphalt recycling and more sustainable solutions for roadway development. As more governments and contractors emphasize the importance of environmental concerns as part of their mix design, engineers and plant operators need to understand how to achieve these goals without sacrificing mix performance specifications. RAP usage beyond 25% can perform comparatively no-RAP mixes when dosed with an effective asphalt rejuvenator. This approach also pairs with the concept of balanced mix design, which focuses on achieving performance-based specifications of the entire mix rather than relying on binder alone to produce results.
Sripath’s ReLIXER is an asphalt rejuvenator, or asphalt recycling agent, that is also demonstrated to be environmentally sustainable. The elixir is formulated from bio-based oils sourced from crops that do not impact food sources. Requiring low doses to achieve effectiveness, ReLIXER enables high-RAP use up to 100%, ultimately reducing the need for virgin bitumen and aggregates. This has an impact not only on the environment but also on cost savings.
Srinivasan, Sripath Technologies, and Bitpath (the Sripath subsidiary dedicated to the Indian asphalt industry) appreciate the invitation by Dr. Singh and his team to participate in this innovative and timely workshop and look forward to future collaborations.
