Warm mix additive development has traditionally been focused on lowering mix compaction temperatures. The team at Sripath has continued to innovate the warm mix additive space with the recent launch of PHALANX®. PHALANX is a superior warm mix additive (WMA) that helps lower both production and compaction temperatures without sacrificing performance requirements. The story was recently covered in the March 2025 issue of Roads & Infrastructure Australia and is available online.
Critical to the development of PHALANX was research conducted by Sripath and the University of Wisconsin exploring the idea that there could be more to WMA formulation than viscosity and adhesion metrics. Their findings revealed increased lubricity and reduced friction as key parameters for achieving desired packing in an asphalt mix.
PHALANX was developed as a result of these findings. A specially engineered molecule and surface-active agent, this warm mix additive improves compactability for both hot asphalt mixes and polymer modified bitumen (PMB) mixes. The WMA is highly dosage efficient with just 0.25 to 0.50 percent of PHALANX needed to work effectively, also helping with cost efficiency. Importantly, PHALANX was designed with sustainability in mind. By reducing both production and compaction temperatures, it can help lower energy consumption. An Environmental Product Declaration detailing PHALANX’s environmental impact is easily accessible on the company’s website.
The article in Roads & Infrastructure Australia also explains how independent research and trials across Europe, the United States, and Australia helped validate PHALANX performance benchmarks simultaneously during development. In addition, Professor Filippo Giustozzi from RMIT University assisted with evaluating PHALANX for the Australian market by exploring optimal dosing for materials commonly used in regional roadway construction. Additional trials are planned as part of Sripath’s global rollout for the warm mix additive.
