PGXpand

PMB mixes have been popular for decades and are designed to maintain the integrity of the roadway while enhancing functional performance characteristics. Most virgin bitumen lacks the complete properties needed in quality to build high-performing roadways. Adding polymers to create a PMB can help strengthen and toughen the roadway surface. PGXpand®, a bitumen-friendly polymer additive, is uniquely designed to allow polymer modified bitumen (PMB) producers to boost the high temperature performance of the binder while maintaining low temperature properties. It minimizes SBS content, improves viscosity, supports higher filler loading, and provides better stability.

How PGXpand is Evolving Polymer Modified Asphalt

Polymer modified asphalt (PMA), or polymer modified bitumen, has long been used to improve pavement durability under increasing traffic loads, climate variability, and performance-based specifications. Traditionally, PMA has relied on elastomeric or plastomeric polymers to enhance specific properties such as rutting resistance and durability. While effective, these approaches often introduce challenges related to storage stability, viscosity control, energy consumption, and cost.    As the asphalt industry continues [...]

Creating a Robust Hot Spray Seal Using PGXpand®

We’re pleased to feature this insight from Steve Halligan at Road Surfacing SOLUTIONS, who brings experience in sustainable road construction and asphalt technologies to explore the topic of hot spray seal for Australian roadways.    This article explores hot spray seal (thin road surfacing), the materials used to create sprayed seals and uses scenarios to demonstrate different types of seals, and the relationship to the road traffic and environment. The terms sprayed [...]

Surface Treatments for Asphalt Roadways

Maintaining asphalt roadways and parking areas doesn’t always require full resurfacing. Surface treatments are cost-effective, durable, and can extend the life of pavement by protecting it from oxidation, moisture, and wear. For road managers, contractors, and property owners, understanding the types of surface treatments and their applications is key to choosing the right solution. Many of these treatments [...]

Road Surface Technologies Issue Highlights PGXpand’s Role in Reducing Carbon Emissions

The global asphalt industry remains under the growing urgency to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and support a circular economy. As producers work toward net-zero goals, one key area of focus is the improvement of polymer modified bitumen (PMB), which has remained a cornerstone of durable, high-performance pavements for decades.    In a recent feature published in Road [...]
