Asphalt mixes incorporating RAP should be evaluated for key performance specifications. To do this, samples from the fractionated RAP stockpiles are taken to a lab for analysis. Determining the amount of RAP viable in a balanced mix design will depend on the established mix specifications. Typically, by using a blend from different fractionated particle sizes, technicians are able to incorporate higher amounts of RAP while meeting regulations.
The selected RAP samples are then blended with the necessary amounts of virgin binder, virgin aggregate, and rejuvenator. This is adjusted as needed until the desired balanced mix design properties are achieved.
This mix sample is lab tested to confirm the intended final mix meets the grade and quality requirements set by the department of transportation or other commissioning body.
