To use high amounts of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement along with an effective rejuvenator, plant and quality managers need to make changes to how they process their materials.

While RAP has historically been perceived as a waste product, plants should treat it with the same care given to other input raw materials. Fractionated and homogenized RAP should be stored and covered to reduce moisture absorption. Rather than storing RAP in uncovered piles in the yard subjected to the elements, the material should be stored under tarps or structural covers. Preheating RAP is often required to remove excess moisture, but protecting the material can reduce the overall energy usage and costs needed to evaporate the water from the RAP before it can be incorporated into a mix. This can also enable plants to run more RAP through production with quicker processing times.
