There are several approaches to evaluating RAP in balanced mix design. Â
Balanced mix design considers the functional characteristics of the mix and seeks a compromise between competing properties in order to meet the required specifications for roadway performance. For example, a balanced mix design will look to offset the impact of stiffness compared to softness and the impact of those attributes on performance parameters such as rutting, cracking, or fatigue resistance. Â
When designing a balanced mix, labs test samples for different properties. Examples of tests can include the Hamburg Wheel Tracking Test, which measures rutting resistance, and the IDEAL-CT, which measures cracking potential. Â
These results are compared to historic roadway performance metrics or established department of transportation specifications to determine the viability of the mix under analysis.Â
