Sripath continues to demonstrate its innovative, sustainable approach to developing asphalt and bitumen additives with the launch of its latest product, PHALANX®.
PHALANX is a superior warm mix additive (WMA) that improves compactability of both hot asphalt mixes and PMB mixes while allowing for the reduction of both compaction and production temperatures. The result is a high-performance WMA technology that may also help lower energy consumption and the overall carbon footprint, demonstrating that performance and sustainability can be jointly achieved.
Highly dosage efficient, just 0.25% to 0.5% of PHALANX is required to significantly improve compaction efficiency with paving temperatures as low as 115°C. Through independent testing, PHALANX has been shown to improve compactability at 130°C when evaluated against control mixes that require 155°C. In contrast, equivalent mixes derived by incorporating synthetic wax pellets at 1.0% and fatty amine derivative liquid at 0.5%, respectively, did not perform as well at the lower compacting temperature in tests conducted by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Victoria, Australia. These findings show mixes dosed with PHALANX are easier to compact at lower temperatures and at lower dosage levels than traditional warm mix additives.
“I am proud of the work of the entire Sripath team to bring PHALANX from concept to market,” said Dr. Krishna Srinivasan, President, Sripath Technologies. “This launch is proof that the market for innovation in asphalt and PMB mix design is prime for sustainable, high-performing additives and that solutions like PHALANX are positioned to continue changing the face of the industry.”
A specially designed molecule, PHALANX offers the necessary advantages of an exceptional WMA. Incorporation into hot asphalt and PMB mixes improves wettability and enhances adhesion properties. As a surface-active agent, PHALANX also acts as a lubricant and more thoroughly coats aggregates within warm mixes. All these properties are important to ensure the performance of WMAs at lower temperatures.
Lower temperature mixes are coveted for more than just the immediate benefits of decreased fuel consumption. Paving seasons can also be extended, providing more opportunities for contractors to complete projects during cooler weather. From a workers’ safety perspective, warm mix additives can also create safer environments by exposing crews to less heat and lower emissions while shortening time to complete installations.
“Sripath continues to lead the way in sustainable solutions that also deliver desired performance properties essential to asphalt and PMB mixes,” said Dr. Deepak Madan, Chief Operating Officer, Sripath. “We are proud to launch PHALANX and further innovate the WMA market with a product that not only offers functional improvements to mixes but also helps contractors lower their carbon footprint by aligning with their environmental goals.”
