Increased use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is becoming more common throughout the U.S. as departments of transportation look to improve their sustainability efforts while also reducing overhead costs. Highly dosage efficient and sustainably sourced, Sripath’s asphalt rejuvenator ReLIXER® was selected for a recent high-RAP roadway trial in Ashburn, Virginia. The story, covered in World Highways, detailed the pre-trial laboratory testing and roadway application of ReLIXER-dosed asphalt mixes.
The project was overseen by a number of agencies including the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Northern Virginia District and the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC). The binder was supplied by Associated Asphalt Partners, LLC, which blended ReLIXER with PG 64-22 binder. Nearly 70 tons of the dosed binder was then delivered to Superior Paving Corporation, which manufactured 2,000 tons of mix including 40% RAP, virgin aggregate, and ReLIXER-dosed binder to the job site.
Onsite VDOT personnel noted that the high-RAP mix was easy to produce, ship, and transfer. The mix, which applied over a five lane-mile portion of the Riverside Parkway / Woodridge Parkway, was also easy to compact and spread. Overall, the trial was considered a success with the newly paved surface showing no flaws.
“We appreciated the opportunity to demonstrate how effectively ReLIXER restores the functional properties of the aged binder in RAP and delivers excellent roadway performance and durability,” commented Krishna Srinivasan, President, Sripath Technologies.
ReLIXER delivers on more than performance requirements. The asphalt rejuvenator is dosage efficient, helping departments of transportation reduce their costs. In addition, ReLIXER supports sustainability in asphalt paving through its own composition. The recycling agent is a unique blend of bio-based green oils sourced from crops that do not have an impact on food sources. “ReLIXER helps reduce the carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions,” explained Deepak Madan, Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer, Sripath.
