World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10, serves as a global platform to raise awareness about mental health issues and to advocate for greater investment in mental health services. According to the Mental Health Foundation, this year’s theme is “Overwhelm: when global events and relentless bad news become too much” and was selected to underscore the impact of constant exposure to distressing news on individuals’ mental well-being.

While this focus is applicable to people from all walks of life, it holds particular significance for industries like asphalt paving where workers already face unique challenges that can affect their mental health.

The Mental Health Crisis in the Asphalt Paving Industry

The construction industry, and affiliated sectors including roadway and asphalt paving, has long been associated with high rates of mental health issues. In the United States, construction workers are four times more likely to die by suicide than the general population, with a suicide rate of 56 per 100,000 male construction workers in 2021, compared to 32 per 100,000 in all industries.

Contributing factors include long hours, seasonal employment, job instability, physical demands, and a culture that has traditionally stigmatized mental health struggles. These conditions are prevalent in the asphalt paving sector, where workers frequently endure harsh weather, isolation, and high-pressure deadlines.

Encouragingly, the industry’s mindset is beginning to shift. Earlier this year, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) convened construction industry executives to set goals aimed at reducing suicides and improving overall wellness. This momentum reflects the true character of the asphalt community, which is made up of individuals who care about their colleagues and their families. While mental health was once a difficult subject to address, shining a spotlight on the issue has inspired many in the industry to step up and support one another.
