What is Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP)? Roadways are made up of aggregate materials (stone) held together with a binding agent (asphalt) engineered to withstand specified traffic loads for a desired time period. The asphalt binders age as they are exposed to sunlight, moisture, and temperature which cause it to oxidize and lose its binding properties. These changes, over time, will result in roadway deterioration and eventually, failure. Regular maintenance extends the life of the roadway but ultimately, maintenance cannot provide the road quality (safety/ride) required. All roadways eventually require resurfacing or replacement to meet ongoing demand. During the rebuilding phase of the roadway lifecycle, the existing roadway asphalt and aggregate is partially (milled) or altogether removed. Historically, these removed materials have been discarded. Due to advances in technology-driven by an interest in sustainability and earth-friendly efforts, there is now an opportunity to economically recover and reuse these materials. This reclaimed material, called Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement / Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP), is combined with new asphalt and aggregate to meet roadway specifications once again. The RAP in this new roadway reduces the amount of required virgin asphalt and aggregate, saving both money and the environment.

The UN did a study and proclaimed that as populations grow, one of the key indicators of GDP growth is growth in roadway network structure. Because of all this road widening, new road building, and repairing of all roads, we are generating a lot of waste called Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement or RAP. Over 750 million tons of RAP were reported to be created in 2020. Only about 20% of that was being reused in pavements and that was as a low-value add filler in the mix. The rest 80% is shipped off to landfills. This is a key area that we need to focus on if we are to drive towards sustainability targets as an industry. By reusing the RAP, we will be able to reduce the amount of material resources we require from the environment. We will reduce the amount of material that we are mining or drilling for in the case of oil. We need to learn to better use RAP materials for the constituents that compose roadways. In other words, aggregate and vitamins can be recycled in the creation of new roadways, thereby reducing the strains that we put on the resources of the earth by using asphalt rejuvenators to empower the use of recycled asphalt pavement.

When roadways age, in order to repair or replace a damaged section, the top layers are milled off. This material is called “Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement” or RAP. In the past, RAP was primarily discarded and ended up in landfills. However, there are valuable materials in RAP – both stone / aggregate, as well as bitumen. Asphalt rejuvenation is the process of bringing new life to this RAP, restoring the aged bitumen, reusing the valuable materials in RAP, and keeping it out of landfills. The old roads of the past can be transformed into the new roadways of today and tomorrow with rejuvenation.
