York Region has launched a forward-looking roadway trial designed to better understand how high Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) performs under real-world traffic and environmental conditions. Located along Leslie Street, this performance-based trial represents an important step toward expanding the use of recycled materials in regional road rehabilitation while maintaining high standards for durability, safety, and cost efficiency.Â
Â
Using recycled materials in asphalt mixes offers clear benefits including lower greenhouse gas emissions, reduced material waste, and cost savings. The challenge lies in ensuring higher RAP contents deliver high-performance roadways comparable to conventional asphalt mixes using virgin materials. Â
Â
This trial aims to generate in-service data that will help provide meaningful data for York Region and for transportation agencies across Canada.Â
Â
The project began with curb and catch basin repairs, followed by nighttime paving operations to minimize disruption to travelers. Four trial sections were constructed in the northbound lanes, each featuring different RAP contents and mix designs. The southbound lanes were paved using standard surface and base asphalt mixes to serve as a control.Â
Â
To track long-term performance, a network of sensors was installed within the asphalt layers and the granular base. These sensors are connected to a control box, allowing researchers to remotely monitor pavement behavior over time and compare standard and high-RAP sections under identical conditions.Â

Sripath is proud to support this important trial alongside the Ontario Road Builders Association (ORBA), the Ontario Asphalt Pavement Council (OPAC), the National Research Council Canada (NRC), and other industry partners. Collaborative, data-driven projects like this are critical to advancing sustainable pavement technologies and building confidence in higher RAP applications. By supporting performance-based evaluation in the field, Sripath remains committed to helping agencies adopt innovative solutions that balance sustainability with long-term pavement performance.Â
