Working in construction can take more than a physical toll on mechanics, paver operators, foremen, technicians, and laborers working in the asphalt paving and roofing industries. This work can also negatively impact mental health and wellness outcomes.
In fact, according to the American Psychiatric Association Foundation’s Center for Workplace Mental Health, the construction industry ranks second in suicide rates out of all major industries. This can be attributed to any number of factors such as preexisting and/or untreated mental health conditions, chronic pain, long work hours, high stress, substance abuse, and distance from loved ones, among others.
Whatever the reason, it is important to remember that you are not alone.
You can always find someone to talk to by calling, texting, or chatting with the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988 in the United States. Additional resources for those outside the U.S. including emergency numbers and suicide hotlines can be found through the International Association for Suicide Prevention’s Find a Helpline feature.
There’s no reason to feel shame or fear judgement for reaching out for help. While these are understandable emotions, support hotlines are free and confidential, designed to provide you with the support you need without consequences for your job or family.
For employers, there’s no better time than today to begin openly providing mental health resources for your employees. Programs that promote awareness and strive to eliminate the stigma around getting help can save lives. These resources can include creating an Employee Assistance Program, conducting supervisor training, and publishing employee-focused fact sheets or newsletters. Employers have the power to help save lives by investing in their employees’ well-being in addition to garnering business benefits.

Remember that while May is Mental Health Awareness Month, supporting those in our communities and spreading awareness for those affected by mental health conditions is a year-round responsibility.
