About Vince Aurilio

Vince Aurilio, P.Eng. is currently the senior technical director of Sripath Technologies, providing technical support across the Sripath Group of Companies to customers and partners worldwide.

With over 40 years of experience as a licensed professional engineer and as an expert in pavement design and materials engineering, Vince Aurilio brings critical expertise and knowledge of industry best practices and trends to every client and project. This includes experience spanning paving solutions for roadways and airports for both private and public transportation.

Aurilio has extensive experience in materials spanning hot mix and warm mix asphalt design and testing, reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) mix design, and stone matrix asphalt (SMA) mix design. He is an advocate of balanced mix design (BMD), which seeks to improve pavement performance through consideration of asphalt mix performance properties rather than relying solely on the characteristics of the binder to meet specifications.

Aurilio is also knowledgeable in geotechnical investigation, non-destructive deflection testing (FWD), in-place pavement recycling and full depth reclamation, asphalt performance testing, pavement evaluations, forensic studies, and life cycle cost analysis.

In addition to his work with Sripath, Aurilio is the owner and president of VA Asphalt Pavement Technologies, an independent engineering firm specializing in asphalt materials, pavement design, asphalt mix design, construction QC/QA, forensic evaluations, and training. Aurilio is consulted by global experts and has authored or coauthored over 30 peer-reviewed papers. He is also a sought-after presenter for keynotes focused on paving materials and design.

Aurilio holds a number of affiliations including with the Transportation Research Board, Transportation Association of Canada, and Canadian Asphalt Technical Association, among others. He also held the position of executive director for the Ontario Asphalt Pavement Council (a council of ORBA) from 2015-2019. Based in Ontario, Canada, he has been a licensed member of Professional Engineers Ontario since 1985.

High-RAP Mixes at Scale with an Asphalt Rejuvenator

Asphalt is the most recycled material in the United States according to the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA), amounting to nearly 97 million tons of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). As a result, over 90% of new roadway surfaces in the U.S. are built using RAP. This trend is spreading globally as more contractors and transportation agencies explore the [...]

Asphalt Rejuvenation and More Sustainable Roadway Surfaces

Demand for sustainable roadway solutions continues to grow as transportation agencies work to address both performance specifications and carbon emission standards. One technology rising in global popularity is the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) along with an asphalt rejuvenator. Asphalt rejuvenation helps to restore the functional properties of the aged binder in RAP, enabling higher percentages of [...]

Warm Mix Asphalt and Compaction

Warm mix asphalt (WMA) production remains an alterative to traditional hot mix asphalt (HMA) approaches as manufacturers explore options for reducing costs and emissions. For example, mixes developed using warm mix asphalt technologies represent 39.6% of all asphalt mix production in the United States. In the European Union, WMA market share has increased to an average of 18.3%, [...]

VIDEO: 8 Step Framework for Balanced Mix Design in Asphalt

TRANSCRIPT: Asphalt mix design engineers are facing challenges in balancing requirements for roadway durability, sustainability, and cost.  Using balanced mix design, or BMD, shifts the focus from volumetric properties to performance testing. This can help engineers optimize resistance to rutting, cracking, aging, and fatigue while also potentially reducing costs and leveraging eco-friendly solutions [...]
