ReLIXER®, an asphalt rejuvenator or recycling agent developed by Sripath, has demonstrated success in trials and real-world use cases since the launch of its U.S. sales in 2015. Since then, international markets have explored the rejuvenator’s ability to help contractors incorporate high amounts (over 25%) of reclaimed asphalt pavement, or RAP, in their mixes. An article in World Highways took a closer look at another successful ReLIXER trial, this time orchestrated by the Ireland Transportation Authorities and Roadstone Ltd.
The trial objective was to use 60% RAP in the asphalt mix while achieving performance goals for the finished roadway surface onsite near Dublin, Ireland. Key to the project was the use of an effective asphalt rejuvenator. Without a rejuvenator to restore the functional properties of the aged bitumen in the RAP materials, high-RAP mixes may fail when it comes to performance standards. ReLIXER is designed to rejuvenate the aged bitumen and improve roadway durability. The trial demonstrated that high-RAP mixes dosed with ReLIXER delivered performance comparable to no-RAP control mixes.
“The trial was extremely successful. With the help of ReLIXER, Roadstone was able to incorporate 60% RAP into the asphalt mix, meeting their goal to recycle and reuse higher levels of reclaimed asphalt,” said Ranjeet Sandhu, General Manager UK, Sripath Innovations. “ReLIXER has been tested, evaluated, and vetted by leading experts in academia, industry and transportation agencies from around the world.”
ReLIXER is also uniquely sustainable. The asphalt rejuvenator is a specially formulated elixir of bio-based oils derived from crops that do not strain food sources. ReLIXER use in high-RAP mixes may help lower greenhouse gas emissions and help contractors lower their carbon footprint. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are publicly available for ReLIXER on the Sripath website.
